Greeting from Consul General
Greeting from Consul General Masahiro Omura
Since recently arriving in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and already experiencing many warm welcomes, I realize how fortunate I am to have the opportunity to serve as Consul General of Japan in Seattle
As the nearest metropolitan area in the contiguous United States to Japan, Seattle region enjoys a tradition of deep and close economic and cultural ties with my country. The development of Boeing’s 787, which employs a wide range of parts and technology from Japan, is just a recent example of this shared economic activity. This area is the home of Weyerhaeuser, which has been doing business with Japan since the early part of last century, and of the younger company Costco, which is quickly expanding in the Japanese market. Moreover, this region is known for its entrepreneurial spirit and many companies that had their start here, including Amazon, Microsoft and Starbucks have found success through innovation and are now industry leaders. In the arena of global health, Japan is a partner with the Seattle-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on polio eradication, development in Africa and other efforts.
The Pacific Northwest, portal to Asia, is a leader in the United States for vigorous Japanese language and country-related studies, and is also engaged in dynamic international exchange activities with Japanese cities, especially through 37 sister affiliations between Washington State and Japan. This includes the Washington-Hyogo Sister State relationship, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary. Many enjoy annual events dedicated to introducing both Japanese traditional and popular culture such as the Seattle Cherry Blossom & Japanese Cultural Festival, the Aki Matsuri, and the Sakura-Con anime, manga, gaming and Asian culture convention.
I am much encouraged by the close friendship shared between this region and Japan, and I wish to express my deepest gratitude for the generous and passionate support and engagement by so many who have been contributing to this relationship. It is my paramount duty to maintain and further advance these ties during my tenure in Seattle, and you are all invited to join me in this effort.
