Minister for Foreign Affairs to Honor Professor Judith N. Rabinovitch, University of Montana

On June 29, 2017, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister’s Commendation for 2017. Professor Judith N. Rabinovitch, Karashima Tsukasa Professor Emerita of Japanese Language and Culture, University of Montana, is among the recipients for her contributions in promoting Japan research in the U.S.A.
After receiving her PhD at Harvard University and teaching at several institutions for 10 years, Professor Judith N. Rabinovitch arrived at the University of Montana in 1991. She became a leader in the University of Montana’s Japanese Department, which was established the following year and was the first of its kind in the state. In addition to 23 years as a teacher at the University of Montana, Professor Rabinovitch has devoted herself to the promotion of Japanese Language and Japan Studies, notably by serving as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board for Japan Review, a publication of the International Research Center for Japanese Studies, and also as a member of the Bridging Scholarship National Selection Committee with the American Association of Teachers of Japanese. She also contributed to the furtherance of friendship between Japan and the United States through sister state exchange and projects introducing Japanese culture. After her retirement in 2015, Professor Rabinovitch has continued her Japanese Kanbun research activities at the University of Montana as a Karashima Tsukasa Professor Emerita of Japanese Language and Culture.
The Foreign Minister's Commendation is awarded to individuals and groups for outstanding achievements in international fields, to acknowledge their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries. This year, the Commendation will be awarded to 193 individuals and 45 groups worldwide.
