Japan Hosts International Conference on Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development

On Wednesday, December 16 in Tokyo, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other Japanese government ministries and public agencies co-hosted the International Conference “Universal Health Coverage in the New Development Era: Toward Building Resilient and Sustainable Health Systems.” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe attended along with a number of officials from other countries, representatives of international and non-governmental organizations, and global health experts who gathered to discuss building sustainable healthcare systems, including achieving universal health coverage, among other related topics.
In his address, Prime Minister Abe highlighted key health challenges in the world and shared his vision for approaching them in order to make a “Proactive Contribution to Peace.” Japan’s global health leadership will extend to next year’s G7 Ise Shima summit in Japan where the Prime Minister plans to make health a priority.  The Sixth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD VI) will also take place in 2016. For the first time, Japan and its partners will hold the TICAD in Africa. Prior to Wednesday’s conference, the Prime Minister shared details on Japan’s global health and development priorities through an article featured in the December 12, 2015, edition of The Lancet magazine.
Right before his address at the conference, Prime Minister Abe received a visit from Bill Gates III, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the meeting was an opportunity for productive discussions on global health and development topics. The two shared mutual praise and appreciation for their respective efforts to promote effective policies and action in these areas.  On December 17, Minster for Foreign Affairs Fumio Kishida also met with Mr. Gates, reflecting active and close ties between Japan and the Gates Foundation.
