[News Release] Update on Recovery at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

The Government of Japan provided an update on recovery operations at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which was posted to the agency’s website on June 3rd. Highlights from the IAEA’s Assessment in the Latest Report:
- The agency acknowledges further progress toward the achievement of a sustainable situation regarding groundwater and contamination issues, including the commencement of freezing a land-side impermeable wall.
- Levels of radioactivity in the marine environment are low and stable. Additionally, the results of four laboratory comparison exercise studies between 2014 and 2015 indicate that Japanese laboratories have produced reliable data.
- The situation with regard to the safety of food, fishery and agricultural production continues to remain stable. Measures taken to monitor and respond to issues regarding radionuclide contamination of food are appropriate, and the food supply chain is under effective control.
