Extending the Memorandum of Cooperation between the Government of Japan and the State of Washington in the United States of America on Economic and Trade Relations
2018/6/28
On June 28 in Seattle, Washington, the Memorandum of Cooperation (MOC) on Economic and Trade Relations was extended in a signing by Ambassador Kazutoshi Aikawa, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Japan in Washington D.C., and Governor Jay Inslee.
The MOC took effect on June 2016 with the duration of two years and the recent signing has extended the period of cooperation for four more years.
The MOC establishes a framework for Japan and Washington to further support and coordinate efforts in 10 fields; climate change, energy, aerospace, life sciences, information and communication technologies, agriculture and value added forest products, disaster risk reduction, distribution, academic cooperation, and trade and investment.
Over the past two years numerous achievements have been made under the auspices of the MOC such as the opening of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) Flight Test Center in Moses Lake, the expansion of business connections in artificial technology through industry meetups and state government-led business missions to Japan, the convening of a symposium on natural disaster management with Japanese and American experts, the establishment of the UW-Tohoku University Academic Open Space; events to promote Japanese food products, and the signing of a memorandum of understanding on the reciprocal partial exemption of driver’s licensing examination. The MOC has also spurred regional collaborative initiatives, including a memorandum of understanding between Aichi Prefecture and Washington State on friendship and mutual cooperation. Please see the separate summary of achievements under the MOC for more details.
With the extension of the MOC signed today, Japan and Washington advance their partnership and further deepen strong economic and trade relations.
