Celebration of 50 years of friendship between the sister cities of Kent-Auburn-Tamba
2018/8/21
The history of exchange between the cities of Tamba, Kent, and Auburn started in 1960, following the establishment of sister state relations between Hyogo and Washington State. At that time, the towns of Kasuga and Kashiwabara took part in exchanges with the cities of Kent and Auburn, respectively.
On August 9, 2018, Consul General Yamada conferred the Consul General’s Award (Certificate of Commendation by the Consul General of Japan in Seattle) to the Kent-Auburn-Tamba Sister Cities Association in recognition of 50 years of exchange activities and the maintenance of such a relationship.
On August 10, formal sister city relations were established between the three cities. Mayor Shinichi Taniguchi of Tamba, Mayor Dana Ralph of Kent, and Mayor Nancy Backus of Auburn signed the official document. A friendship delegation from Tamba City, including Mr. Ohta, Tamba City Council Chair; Tamba Youth Ambassadors; and members of Tamba Sister City Association traveled from Japan for this celebration. Deputy Mayor Bob Baggett of Auburn and Bill Boyce, Kent City Council President, together with other council members and members of the sister city association from each city, joined in the signing ceremony, which made the total attendance of about 40 people. The two American sister cities made official proclamations designating August 10 “Tamba Japan Day”.
The three cities will strive to further friendships and deepen their mutual understanding through active exchanges in a variety of areas such as culture, education, arts, and the economy.
