2019/3/28
On March 25, The Government of Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) appointed Seattle-based chef Mr. Shiro Kashiba as “Goodwill Ambassador to Spread Japanese Cuisine.” Along with 16 fellow appointees this year, Mr. Kashiba represents high culinary skill in Japanese cuisine and through his ambassadorship, will assist in promoting Japanese cuisine and food culture abroad.
Mr. Kashiba began his career as an apprentice at a first-class sushi restaurant in the affluent Ginza neighborhood in Tokyo. With the goal of spreading the “Edo-mae” style sushi overseas, he moved to the United States and worked as a chef at the Japanese restaurant “Maneki”, located in the International District of Seattle. Mr. Kashiba’s dedication, skill, and passion led him to create two of his own restaurants: “Nikko” in the International District, and “Shiro’s” in Belltown. Currently, Mr. Kashiba is running “Sushi Kashiba,” where his expertise in sushi is well-known and relished by Seattle locals and visitors alike.
Mr. Kashiba is the second to be appointed in Washington State, preceded by Mr. Takeyuki Suetsugu, a highly renowned chef, now in Moses Lake.
The Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle congratulates Mr. Kashiba and looks forward to joining him in promoting Japanese cuisine and culture in the Seattle area.
