Japan Fair 2019

2019/7/19
On June 29 and 30, Japan Fair 2019 was held at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.
Various Japan-related organizations and Japanese companies participated and over approximately 20,000 people enjoyed Japanese culture and food.

Japanese art such as ikebana (flower arrangement), shodo (calligraphy) and sado (tea ceremony) were performed and displayed, Japanese regional culture was introduced by Seattle Necchu School, food samples were provided by Japanese and Asian restaurants, documentary movies filmed by NHK (Japan’s national TV broadcasting station) were introduced, taiko (Japanese drum) was performed, and Japanese companies organized fun games and promotional events for the visitors at their booths.

A variety of demonstrations and performances were held on stage as well. One of the highlights was Awa Odori (Japanese traditional dance), which is originally from Tokushima prefecture. Mr. Hideaki Oka came all the way from Tokushima prefecture for the performance. An Awa Odori dancer, he was awarded by Tokushima Prefecture in 2013 for promoting Awa Odori not only throughout Japan, but also to other countries. Mr. Oka performed his dance on Japan Fair’s stage and the audience enjoyed dancing together with him.

At the fair, the Consulate held a booth to promote the Tokyo Olympics 2020 and travelling to Japan and also taught booth visitors how to make origami tanabata (Star Festival) decorations such as lanterns and dolls.
