Visit to the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle by Kaiho High School Students from Okinawa in the Kakehashi Project

On October 24, students from Kaiho High School in Okinawa visited the Seattle Consulate as participants of the Kakehashi Project. The Kakehashi Project aims to promote an understanding of Japan in areas such as Japanese politics, economy, society, culture, history, and diplomatic policy. The implementation of the project is also intended to strengthen the foundation for Japan’s diplomacy by encouraging the dissemination of information on Japan’s charms and diplomatic position.
In addition, Kaiho High School students were hosted by Curtis Senior High School students and their families. They visited the high school and presented on U.S. and Okinawan history in English, taught how to make Mitarashi dango, and introduced Japanese history and culture to Curtis Senior High School students.

Consul General Yamada welcomed the students and spoke on Seattle-based industries, the history of Seattle’s Nikkei (Japanese Americans), and women’s social advancements. Maya Oshiro, Vice President of Okinawa Kenjinkai of Washington State, also addressed the students and talked about the Kenjinkai’s activities. Lastly, the Consulate staff explained consular office work and the relationship between Japan and Washington State.

Visit at Toray Composite Materials America
During their stay, the students visited Toray Composite Materials America and learned about the work and career paths of its employees. There was a session where students could conduct experiments using the company’s products that allowed students to become more familiar with the company’s initiatives.
