2019 Fall Imperial Decoration Conferment Ceremony

On Thursday, December 12, a conferment ceremony and reception was held at the Official Residence to congratulate Dr. Donald C. Hellmann, Professor Emeritus of the University of Washington, for his receipt of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon.

Consul General Yamada thanked Professor Hellmann for his contribution to promoting academic exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States of America, and congratulated him on the conferment of his Decoration.

Professor Resat Kasaba (Director of the University of Washington’s Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies), Professor Emeritus Kenneth Pyle (University of Washington), Mr. Chris Coward (Principal Research Scientist and Director of Technology & Social Change Group at University of Washington Information School), and Ms. Diane Adachi (a former student of Professor Hellmann who launched various programs with him) congratulated Professor Hellmman and shared various episodes about his academic career of nearly half a century. Finally, a congratulatory speech was presented by his son, Mr. Jack Hellmann, and a toast was made.

In addition to the speeches, a congratulatory letter from Defense Minister Taro Kono, who had a long relationship with Professor Helmmann of many years, was read by Consul General Yamada. A congratulatory letter was also received from Dr. Ana Mari Cauce, President of the University of Washington, and was read by Professor Kasaba.
