Young Japanese American “Fireside Chat” Series Inaugural Event featuring J. Kenji López-Alt – 6/4/2026

2026/6/15
In collaboration with the U.S.-Japan Council, the Consulate has launched the “Northwest Fireside Chat Series,” our first talk event and reception series for young Japanese Americans from the local community. For the inaugural event on June 4, we welcomed renowned chef and James Beard Foundation Award–winning author J. Kenji López-Alt to the Official Residence along with about 50 young Japanese American professionals.

Consul General Iyori congratulated the organizers on hosting this inaugural event for young Japanese Americans and expressed his hope that it would become a new venue where young Japanese Americans could gather, share ideas, and inspire one another. Mr. Sam Ushio, U.S.-Japan Council Pacific Northwest Region Lead and Ikigai Lab Founder, and Mr. Josh Ishibashi, Chair-elect of the Japan-America Society of the State of Washington, served as moderators. In a conversation with Mr. Ushio, Kenji shared his career path, having grown up in culturally diverse New York City as the son of a Japanese mother and an American father.

At the reception that followed, guests enjoyed lively conversation and dishes prepared by the Consulate’s chef.
