Consul General’s Commendation Awarded to Mrs. Mary Mariko Ohno and Mrs. Ritsuko Kashiba

On September 12, 2023, Consul General Hisao Inagaki awarded the Consul General’s Commendation to Mrs. Mary Mariko Ohno and Mrs. Ritsuko Kashiba in recognition of their achievements in promoting cultural exchange between Japan and the United States. The commendations were presented during the Farewell Reception for Consul General Inagaki and Mrs. Inagaki.
Mrs. Mary Mariko Ohno has contributed greatly to the development and popularization of traditional Japanese arts in the United States by teaching Japanese traditional dance and nagauta shamisen. In 1983, Mrs. Ohno founded Kabuki Academy as a place to learn traditional Japanese performing arts, such as Nihon-buyo (dance). She has devoted herself to teaching students of all ages to this day.
Mrs. Ritsuko Kashiba has been involved in calligraphy for many years and has devoted to the promotion of calligraphy in the region as Seattle Chapter President of Beikoku Shodo Kenkyukai, a national calligraphy organization, since 2010. She has also actively supported the activities of the Japanese American community in Seattle by participating in the Seattle Cherry Blossom Festival & Japanese Cultural Festival every year since 1978.
The Consul General’s Commendation is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements and contributions to mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States.
