Decoration Conferment Ceremony for Dr. Marie Christine Anchordoguy, Professor Emerita, Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington

On March 11, 2026, a conferment ceremony and reception were held at the Official Residence to congratulate Dr. Marie Christine Anchordoguy, Professor Emerita at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington, on her receipt of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon. The ceremony was attended by Dr. Anchordoguy’s family and friends, as well as university colleagues and community members.

Consul General of Japan in Seattle IYORI Makoto expressed his appreciation for Dr. Anchordoguy's many years of continued contributions and achievements and formally conferred the Order. Dr. Anchordoguy then spoke about what had drawn her to the field of Japanese studies and reflected on her research career. She also expressed her gratitude for the support of her family, colleagues, and the staff of the Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle and gave her heartfelt thanks for the honor of receiving the Decoration.

Dr. Anchordoguy earned her doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley. Since 1989, she has taught in the Japan Studies program at the University of Washington's Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies, where she has served as department chair on three occasions. She also served for over a decade as co-editor of The Journal of Japanese Studies, one of the most prestigious academic journals in the field. Her research on Japan's political economy has earned widespread acclaim both in the United States and internationally, and she has made immense contributions to the promotion of academic exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and the United States.
