Consulate Joins Cherry Blossom Festival in Ferndale!
The Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle joined the Ferndale Cherry Blossom Festival for the first time on March 18, 2023. A wide variety of groups gathered at the Pioneer Pavilion Community Center to share Japanese culture with the local community. The day was filled with musical and dance performances as well as hands-on activities including Japanese sumi-e (ink painting), origami (paper folding) and ikebana (flower arranging).
The Consulate presented its two most popular cultural programs: “Samurai Undressed”, a presentation about Japanese armor, and “The Fabulous Furoshiki”, a demonstration of Japanese cloth wrapping techniques. Both were very well received by festival attendees.
Ferndale has a strong connection to Japan through its sister city Minamiboso in Chiba Prefecture, as does its neighbor Bellingham, which is celebrating 65 years of sister city relations with Tateyama in Chiba Prefecture this year.
The festival drew over 800 visitors. We hope to continue to support this great event in the future.
