Update on Recovery at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station

The Government of Japan provided an updated comprehensive report on recovery operations at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in August, which can be viewed together with the IAEA’s own assessment at the following link:

Highlights from the IAEA’s Latest Assessment in the August report:

  • The removal of highly contaminated water from trenches at reactor Units 2 and 3 has been completed, lowering the risk of leakage.
  • Sea area monitoring results indicate that the radiation levels in the ocean environment have been stable.
  • A system for preventing products with levels of cesium that exceed regulatory limits from entering the food supply is being implemented.
