 On June 15, 2023, Consul General Hisao Inagaki awarded the Consul General’s Commendation to kiri-e artist Ms. Akiko “Aki” Sogabe, and longtime supporters of Nikkei community activities Mr. Frank Fukui & Mrs. Penny Fukui. The commendations were presented during the Japanese Cultural and Community Center of Washington’s online Tomodachi Gala event.

 As a kiri-e (papercutting) artist, Ms. Akiko Sogabe has created many works depicting the lives of Japanese immigrants, Japanese culture, and seasonal changes. She has used her kiri-e artwork to promote Japanese culture by donating her works to local Nikkei organizations and holding workshops at elementary and middle schools.

 Mr. Frank Fukui & Mrs. Penny Fukui have actively participated in the cultural activities of local Nikkei organizations while supporting their continued operations, and have devoted many years to supporting the life and welfare of the local Nikkei community.

 The Consul General’s Commendation is awarded in recognition of outstanding achievements and contributions to mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and the United States.
