“J Spark Seattle” Young Japanese American Series Event featuring Ms. Lori Matsukawa – 9/24/2026
On September 24, Consul General Hirota hosted a talk event and reception at the Official Residence for young Japanese Americans in the region. The event was the second in a series that launched on June 4 of this year. During the event, Consul General Hirota announced the series’ new name, “J Spark Seattle,” along with its logo. With the “J” standing for “Japanese” and “Japanese American,” the name was chosen in the hope that the series will foster new ideas and connections among young Japanese Americans in the region and within the Japan–U.S. relationship.
The event featured a conversation between Emmy Award–winning journalist and author Lori Matsukawa and a moderator representing the young Japanese American community. Ms. Matsukawa spoke about her journey as a pioneer among Asian American journalists and offered advice and words of encouragement to the young participants, urging them to embrace their roots and thrive in their careers.
In addition, Deputy Consul General Tsuge gave a well-received presentation, “Japan Then and Now,” highlighting the little-known special relationship between Japan and Washington State, as well as the role of the Consulate.
The program concluded with a toast by Ms. Audrey Yamamoto, President and CEO of the U.S.–Japan Council. It was a lively event where young Japanese Americans deepened their connections while enjoying delicious Japanese cuisine prepared by the Consulate’s chef.
J Spark Seattle is designed as a platform for young Japanese Americans to connect with Japan, share ideas, and build new connections.
The event was co-organized with the U.S–Japan Council Pacific Northwest Region.
