On June 28, a Summer Reception was held at the Official Residence to celebrate the strong ties between Washington State and Japan. Over 300 people were in attendance, including state and local elected officials, leaders of both Japanese and local businesses, Nikkei community members, and representatives from sister-city and Japanese cultural organizations.

The reception was held to commemorate the 4-year extension of the Memorandum of Cooperation between Japan and Washington State on Economic and Trade Relations, which was signed earlier that day by WA Governor Jay Inslee and Plenipotentiary Minister Aikawa from the Embassy of Japan (pictured above). Secretary of State Kim Wyman and Department of Commerce Director Brian Bonlender spoke about their hopes for the continued advancement of economic cooperation between Washington State and Japan. King County Executive Dow Constantine, state legislators and other elected officials, and Navy leaders were also in attendance and offered remarks that touched on the region’s close ties with Japan.
