  • Short-Term Stay refers to temporary visits of up to 90 days with non-paid activities as the purpose of the trip
  • Nationals from countries that have visa exemption arrangements with Japan can enter without obtaining a visa.
  • Please print out all required documents and apply for a visa, as incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  • **PLEASE NOTE: Additional documents may be required after Consul’s review.
  • We only accept applications from applicants who have long-term resident status in the U.S.A. Applications from those who entered U.S. with B1/B2 visa or who are under U.S. visa exemption status will not be accepted.

【Definition】 A foreign citizen traveling stand-by OR who must leave the airport while enroute to a third country, such as passengers with overnight flight connections or passengers arriving in Japan at one airport and departing from a different airport (example Narita to Haneda or vice versa). (For passengers who transit in Japan for immediate flight connections and are not required to go through immigration clearance, a visa is not required.)

【Definition】 A foreign citizen traveling to Japan for visiting relatives/acquaintances who reside in Japan as an U.S. military member (SOFA), not including business or academic purposes. It is not permitted to perform activities to undertake revenue generating business operation or activities to receive remuneration.


Applying for a visa with a COE (Certificate of Eligibility)Open a new window 
 
Please have your proxy in Japan obtain a COE by submitting an application with the nearest Regional Immigration Bureau of the Ministry of Justice to the proxy’s place of work/residence in Japan (an application for Certificate of Eligibility cannot be made at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs).

A visa for visiting Japan for non-tourist purposes, such as for work, study abroad, or family stay.
The basic rule is to apply for a visa by attaching a "Certificate of Eligibility(COE)".
In some cases, you can apply for a visa without a COE.
