JET Program
Experience Japan
The JET Program seeks to help enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The program also aims to improve foreign language education in Japan and to encourage international exchange at the local level by fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth. JET Program participants serve as either Coordinators for International Relations or as Assistant Language Teachers. The program is conducted in cooperation with various Japanese Government Ministries, local organizations and the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations.
JET Program Available Positions:
![]() Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) |
ALTs are mainly placed in local board of education offices or public and/or private elementary, junior and/or senior high schools. These participants are primarily engaged in English language instruction.
In general, ALTs are not required to have Japanese language skills. However, successful applicants make an effort to study or continue studying the Japanese language prior to and after arriving in Japan and are interested in the Japanese education system and ESL instruction in Japan. |
![]() Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) |
CIRs are placed in offices of local authorities or related organizations and are primarily engaged in internationalization activities. CIR applicants must have strong verbal and written Japanese language skills as proficiency is necessary to function in Japanese office environment. As a CIR, you might implement international exchange or language education programs, receive guests from abroad, give speeches, or assist with translation and interpreting. |

Information Sessions in Fall 2024
The Consulate-General of Japan in Seattle’s JET Program staff will be hosting virtual information sessions for prospective applicants. Registrants will learn more about the roles, experiences, and application tips and tricks.
Information sessions will be held on Zoom. You will need to register 24 hours before the information session you would like to attend in order to receive an invitation link.
